Road trips in Canada, and probably in the USA, always have to include pictures of the biggest things.

I don't know Steph & Adam, who took this picture, but it is quite possibly the classic Canadian giant thing picture.

Wawa is a little town in Northern Ontario (well, what Southerners call Northern), on the Trans-Canada Highway. It was notorious in the 1970s for being really hard to hitch-hike away from. If you got let off in Wawa, you might be there for a while. Or so the legend went. Wonder if it was ever true.

The Canada Goose used to be rare, if you can believe it. I remember teachers telling me about its near-extinction, and the big efforts, particularly by Jack Miner, to bring it back. Was that true? Seems hard to believe now that Canada Goose droppings are in every urban park. No matter, I still love their colouring, the way they co-operate in the air, and how cute the little goslings are.

Thanks, Steph & Adam for sharing this picture of the Wawa Goose. And thanks, Wawa, for a Canadian icon.

What a great concept: fake travel!

This photo comes from Arturo de Albornoz, who lives in Mexico and (I think) is in the advertising business there.

Alberta Travel - Canada, by Arturo de Albornoz

Arturo liked the Travel Alberta ambience of what appears to be the Toronto subway system. But I think he's on to something much bigger.

Imagine a great hall full of displays like this from all over the world. Eiffel Tower to the right, Great Pyramid to the left, some famous American monuments straight down the hall.

I volunteer to take this travelling exhibition wherever in the world there are people with cameras.

Don't Recline in Coach

January 11th 2009 00:53
I don't belong to a lot of Facebook groups (not by the mega-standards of some Facebook addicts, anyway), but one that I'm very happy to be a member of is "Don't Recline in Coach". I think I am member 6 out of 10 or so but it's my life's mission to promote the message.

Don't recline.

Signed,

Grumpy Person Behind You on the Plane

P.S. I have been known to resort to kicking the seat in front of me if things get really ugly.

Web check-in is a great thing. You get the paperwork done at home, or at your hotel, and show up at the airport, bags in hand, ready to put them in the hold and board the plane.

There's a separate lineup (at least in the Canadian airports I've been through in the last year or so) for those with boarding passes

Getting More Air Miles, Faster

October 8th 2008 04:56
My local Safeway has a monthly promotion, great for Air Miles (TM) collectors.

The Air Miles loyalty plan crosses brands. Cardholders can collect points at Safeway, Shell gas stations, Boston Pizza restaurants, just to name a few places

When planning a long trip, do you look for a cheap flight and try to work hotels around it?

Or, if you see a deal on accommodation, would you take it and try to find a flight that doesn't break your budget

Do You Take Your Laptop?

September 23rd 2008 04:09
My next trip may not be right away, but it will be the first time I'll have to seriously consider taking my laptop. I've travelled with it, of course, but not on a mega-leaving-thecountry-for-a -while getaway.

In earlier times, when laptops weren't invented and long distance calls cost way too much, I enjoyed the complete disconnection of being away from home. How can you miss a place or a person when you speak to them daily? (Apart from those 2 or 3 years in the 20s that everyone can be forgiven for

Corner Gas Invented the Staycation

July 24th 2008 07:35
On the TV show Corner Gas (I just took the Corner Gas tour), new girl in town Lacey had some trouble with the way Brent (owner of Corner Gas) spent his vacation - sitting on a chair, 100 yards from the gas station, pretending to be far away.

Beautiful
