Skip On Over - September 2008

When planning a long trip, do you look for a cheap flight and try to work hotels around it?

Or, if you see a deal on accommodation, would you take it and try to find a flight that doesn't break your budget?

I've probably gone for the cheap flight and then scrambled to find affordable accommodation.

Sometimes I find myself resenting wasted time on a trip because the cost to stay is so high. Lately I think it's harder to find good low-cost accommodation than it is to actually go from A to B.

Maybe that's a misperception, and of course, it depends entirely on where you are going. But for middle of the road, mainstream travel, it's the accommodation that kills me.

Do You Take Your Laptop?

September 23rd 2008 04:09
My next trip may not be right away, but it will be the first time I'll have to seriously consider taking my laptop. I've travelled with it, of course, but not on a mega-leaving-thecountry-for-a -while getaway.

In earlier times, when laptops weren't invented and long distance calls cost way too much, I enjoyed the complete disconnection of being away from home. How can you miss a place or a person when you speak to them daily? (Apart from those 2 or 3 years in the 20s that everyone can be forgiven for).

If I leave the laptop at home and don't check into an internet cafe, will I be getting away with something?

Dervla Murphy is my role model.

Smart Packing is both a book and a website, by Susan Foster.

Foster is a clothing expert and a live-out-of-a-suitcase traveller. This little book is practical and useful.

There are diagrams and instructions on how to plan suitable wardrobes for any kind of trip - without carrying too much stuff. Buying luggage. Being calm about your stuff while travelling.

But here's my bottom line on this book: she tells you how to dress. I hate clothes, hate shopping for them, hate caring for them. I do appreciate being covered up but that's where it stops.

I would be better dressed at home if I lived out of a suitcase packed the Foster way.
