Getting More Air Miles, Faster

October 8th 2008 04:56
My local Safeway has a monthly promotion, great for Air Miles (TM) collectors.

The Air Miles loyalty plan crosses brands. Cardholders can collect points at Safeway, Shell gas stations, Boston Pizza restaurants, just to name a few places.

On the first Tuesday of each month, Safeway gives its own Safeway loyalty card holders a promotion: 10% off the price of the groceries, or ten times the Air Miles, for purchases over $35.00.

It usually makes most sense to take the 10% cash off. But - every now and then there is an in-store Air Miles deal too good to resist.

Today's great deal was "Buy 4, Get 50 Points". Ten times 50 points is 500. I bought 8 (we use a lot of these anyway) for $16.00 and added some other groceries to hit the $35 mark. So, 1,000 points.

It takes 900 points to fly from here (Calgary) to Vancouver. The tax is extra - and it can cost more than the ticket price - but who can argue with 1,000 free points? Great deal. Thanks, Safeway, thanks Air Miles.

UPDATE: Oh NO! My friend just got her statement and tells me there was no double dipping. No 1,000 points! So not the deal it seemed to be. I didn't see the fine print but beware of things that look too good to be true. That's why I only took the bonus Air Miles on the promoted products, and took the 10% cash off the rest of my order. Usually it does pay to take the cash.

The math now: I get 1 AIr Mile per 15 cents spent. It looks like this promo gave me 50% more on the specific promotional products.

I'll have to check my statement when it comes.

A deal like that would be useful for me. Might be able to fly home more often than once in the last three years. Of course, I'd need to collect about 200,000 miles to get a free flight.
