Top Trumps - A Spa Hotel in SoHo New York

An upmarket Turkish inspired downtown spa with Manhattan’s first luxury hammams for both men and women.

The first Trump hotel in downtown Manhattan boasts terrific views of the city’s skyline and its spa features Manhattan’s first luxury hammams for both men and women.

Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka has overseen the Turkish inspired spa design by spa specialists DiGiuseppe Architects. Elegant and tasteful, with a marble fountain that greets you on entering; Ivanka doesn’t appear to have inherited her father Donald’s ostentatious flair.

The 11,000 sq ft spa is located on the seventh and eighth floors and has nine private treatment rooms and a fitness centre with Technogym equipment. There’s a 6,000 sq ft pool deck on the seventh floor, which includes a blue Italian mosaic-lined lounge pool with a cascading waterfall and three private cabanas for guests only.

SPA EXPERIENCE

Ivanka, who’s probably experienced more spa trips than the average person, has chosen all of the spa’s product lines and treatments. These include the skin-care range by Kate Somerville, the Californian “skin health expert”, who looks after the complexions of celebrities such as Jessica Alba and Paris Hilton.

Treatment

complexions of celebrities such as Jessica Alba and Paris Hilton.

The DermaLucent Facial involves photo-absorption therapy, using LED lights, to boost the skin’s natural renewal system. In Japan they call it“the happy lamp” because it simulates serotonin and low light therapy is often used to treat depression. It also speeds up the recovery time after dermabrasion and botox treatments and reduces sebum production, so can prevent the development of spots and acne. It’s a non-invasive treatment that works with the body’s natural processes to fight the signs of aging.

The condition of my skin was evaluated by my aesthetician Jennie. She then cleansed and exfoliated my face with ExfoliKate and applied two serums for preventative care. First came Quench Hydrating Face Serum, a brightening moisturiser, followed by Deep Tissue Repair for anti-aging. Both include UV protection, so being particularly photosensitive after the treatment isn’t a problem.

Once this was done she lowered the LED light over my face and asked me if I would like to wear goggles to protect my eyes, but I decided to keep them shut throughout the process so that my eyelids would also benefit.

The DermaLucent machine starts with a bright red light that becomes shockingly bright and quite uncomfortable. This doesn’t last long though and after a couple of minutes my eyes adjusted accordingly. The light speeds up, increasing the blood flow and oxygen throughout the epidermis, so the serum’s penetration is enhanced. As the light changed, from bright yellow to green in the 20 minutes I was under it, Jennie massaged my hands and feet.

The large rectangular light is rather imposing and not for the claustrophobic.
